The law is constantly changing and officers are legally responsible for understanding and applying these changes. Unfortunately, most departments are not adequately equipped to provide their officers with legal updates in a manner that can be immediately applied on the job. Not knowing the latest law can adversely impact cases and can subject officers to civil and even criminal penalties. Every officer needs a legal refresher course once each year. If you have not received training in this area recently, you need to attend this course. Topics covered will include new major federal cases involving search and seizure, confessions, right to counsel, eyewitness identification and civil/criminal liability.
Instructor: Robert Thetford, (FBI retired); 25 years, Legal Counsel, FBI; Attorney and former prosecutor; certified APOST instructor since 1984; author/co-author of five books and numerous articles.
Sponsors: This seminar is sponsored by AUM's Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse & Training Institute, the Institute for Criminal Justice Education, Inc, Alabama Peace Officers' Association, U.S. Attorney's Office, MDA, and ADECA Law Enforcement Planning/Traffic Safety Division. This training is funded by an ADECA Law Enforcement Planning subgrant #15-DJ-ST-008 awarded to AUM and its Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse. This APOST Certified (6 hour) training seminar will begin at 9:00 a.m. (registration at 8:30), and will end at 4:00 p.m. This seminar is open to law enforcement officers only and there is no cost to attend.
